Break out of your usual routes

Most of us walk, run and drive the same few streets. City Unlock shows every street of your city on a live map, so you can see where you’ve never been.

Walk and run

See the paths you haven’t taken

Start a walk or run and City Unlock tracks your route with GPS, also with your phone locked in your pocket. Every street you take turns green, and you see the percent of your city you’ve explored on foot.

The app's map of Chicago: the paths through Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary that were run glow green and the rest are grey. The header shows 3.17% of the city explored on foot.

Collections

Collect the places you visit

Not sure where to go next? Follow a collection, such as coffee shops, parks or museums, and every one of those places in your city appears on the map. Spend a minute at one and it unlocks. Choose from more than 90 kinds of places.

Spots

Discover spots locals love

Find great places through photos other explorers pin around your city, and share your own with a comment. To remember a place just for yourself, keep the photo private: it shows on your map and only you can see it.

Shared photos and comments are checked before they go on the map.

Two posts about a place in Lincoln Park, Chicago: a sunset photo over the Nature Boardwalk with the comment “Quietest spot in Lincoln Park”.

Drive

Map out the roads you drive

Start a drive and the roads you take turn amber on your driving map. Walks and runs unlock a map of their own, so you always know how much of your city you’ve covered by car and on foot.

The driving map of Chicago with the roads driven in amber across the city. The header shows 16.5% of the city explored by car.

Leaderboards

Climb your city’s leaderboard

See who has explored the most of your city. Each city has a leaderboard for walkers and runners and one for drivers, and every collection has its own. Unlock more streets and places to climb them.

Other explorers never see your account’s name, photo or email. You appear under a made-up name unless you choose your own.
